uJeqe…Wholesome Steamed Bread

Yesterday, I celebrated #WorldTripeDay by posting my recipe for tripe, I got some questions as to what I generally eat it with. I am a huge fan of steamed bread. It is my favourite thing to make and my favourite thing to eat. If I had to cut out rice completely out of my life, it would definitely be replaced with uJeqe. Try this recipe and let me know how it goes.

Ingredients:

  • 3 Cups, Cake Wheat Flour
  • 5ml Instant Dry Yeast
  • 1 Egg, Beaten
  • 3 Tbsps. Sugar (White or Brown)
  • 150ml Warm Water
  • 5ml Salt

Method:

In a large bowl, mix flour, yeast & sugar. Add in beaten egg, fold into dry ingredients. In a jug mix water and salt until salt has dissolved. Gradually add water bit by bit to the dry mixture, and knead it until the dough is soft and smooth. Place dough into a lightly greased bowl, cover bowl with a plastic bag and leave in a warm place for an hour to rise. After risen, knead the dough in bowl for 30 seconds. Fill one third of a big pot with of boiling water, place pot on a high heated stove and close the pot. Place dough into a lightly greased enamel bowl. Place bowl of dough in the pot with water. Allow to cook for 45 minutes without opening the pot. After 45 minutes, poke the middle using a butter knife, if knife comes out clean then it is cooked. Remove from heat and serve while warm with a curry.

*Tip: Rub butter or oil on your hands before kneading, this helps the dough not to stick to your hands.
